One day, in 2019, during our family vacation with 8 other family members, my 7 year-old daughter complained of a stomach ache. My husband and I took her to the local emergency room, and after a couple of basic, immediate tests, the emergency room doctor told us to go to the “big kid’s hospital…. now.” The doctor said: “I think your daughter has leukemia.”
I’m not able to put into words the emotions I felt hearing that.
We packed our holiday spirit and presents and drove 2 hours back home and directly to the hospital. We would not “leave” for 3 years. It’s easy to talk about it when you’re not in it. The storm is real, and so is the feeling of helplessness.
My family was going through chemo while outside the world was going through a pandemic.
My Olivia rang the cancer-free bell in February of 2023. Since then, she has been focusing on being herself before she was interrupted. She’s a bit artistic, as her mother, and one day she brought me home a gift for Christmas. It was a pair of ceramic earrings that she had made me in her pottery class. They were teardrops in shiny hunter green. They were perfect! I loved them so much I thought to add clay work earrings to my collection. We have decided to call this collection Olive Daze.
